It is with sadness that we inform you of the recent passing of Dr. Frederick John Dill on September 19, 2015.
Dr. Dill received his BSc at UBC in 1961, MSc at UBC in 1964, and PhD at UC Berkeley in 1969, and was a faculty member of the UBC Department of Medical Genetics for 31 years, as well as a clinical Cytogeneticist at BC Children's Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital. Dr. Dill taught genetics to countless numbers of undergraduate, graduate and medical students. His passion for the field influenced many undergraduate students, leading them to choose a career in medical genetics. He regularly attended the CCMG and ASHG annual meetings, adding his wealth of experience and insight to the discussions. He provided excellent patient care, and his depth of knowledge and wisdom were appreciated by his colleagues in the laboratory and the clinic. He is remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of being his student or his colleague. Dr. Dill will also be remembered for his generous gift of time and talent that allowed graduate students and faculty members to get together year after year to enjoy his famous salmon BBQs.
Dr. Dill began sailing boats as a young boy on Bowen Island and raced Star boats very successfully until very recently. He also participated in many off shore races. Dr. Dill was an honorary life member of the Kitsilano Yacht Club. In retirement he turned his interest and skills to woodworking and bird photography. He was predeceased by his son Noel and is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Marian (Brian), grandson George, brother Peter (Gail) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. No service by his request; a memorial will be held on October 17, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prostate Cancer Research-BC Cancer Foundation.
