Fowzan Sami Alkuraya

Professor and Principal Scientist, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center
Fowzan Alkuraya is a Professor of Human Genetics at Alfaisal University and a Senior Consultant and Principal Clinical Scientist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. He graduated with first class honor and was the valedictorian of his class at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He did his pediatric residency at Georgetown University Hospital, followed by a fellowship in clinical genetics and another in molecular genetics at Harvard Medical School. He also did a postdoctoral research fellowship in the area of developmental genetics in the lab of Prof. Richard Maas at Harvard Medical School. He returned to his native Saudi Arabia to establish the Developmental Genetics Lab at KFSHRC. He is an authority in the area of Mendelian genetics with more than 360 published manuscripts that describe his lab’s discovery of hundreds of novel disease genes in humans as well as many other seminal contributions to the field of human genetics as described in a profile published by The Lancet. He is a frequently invited speaker at local, regional and international conferences, on the editorial board of prominent human genetics journals, and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including William King Bowes Award in Medical Genetics and King Salman Award for Disability Research.

Linlea Armstrong

Dr. Armstrong is a Clinical Geneticist. Her clinical practice is primarily based at BC Women’s Hospital. She maintains a general genetics practice, with special expertise in caring for individuals and families with genetic tumour predisposition syndromes. She has a passion for health professions education, and therefore serves two educational leadership roles: 1) Clinical Education Director within her department, a role which encompasses the Royal College Residency Program Program Directorship as well as the Medical Director role for the Masters of Genetic counselling Program. 2) Director Faculty Development for the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program These roles have her working closely with fellows, residents, medical students, and genetic counselling students, and teachers within all these programs.

Frederick R. Bieber

Medical Geneticist, Brigham and Women's Hospital Associate Professor of Pathology Harvard Medical School
Frederick R. Bieber has been a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University for over 37 years, where he directs formal courses in genetics and forensics offered to Harvard undergraduate, graduate, medical students as well as to post-doctoral fellows. As an ABMGG Board-Certified Medical Geneticist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Bieber provides clinical diagnostic genetic laboratory testing to patients and their families in the Partners Healthcare System. His academic work focuses on the laboratory and statistical aspects of DNA-based human identification, with a focus on kinship analysis and its attendant legal, ethical, and policy implications.
Dr. Bieber has served as an appointed member of the National DNA Databank of Canada Advisory Committee since its inception in 2000, as a member of the DNA Subcommittee of the New York State Forensic Commission, and as Chair of the Quality Assurance oversight committee of the United States Army DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL). He has served as a member of numerous state and federal forensic advisory boards, including the congressionally mandated FBI DNA Advisory Board, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virginia Department of Public Safety and the National Commission on Forensic Science.
As a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve, Dr. Bieber served on active duty at the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL/Ft. Gillem, GA) and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL/Rockville, MD and Dover, DL). Professor Bieber was a member of the World Trade Center Kinship and Data Analysis Panel (KADAP) for the DNA-based identification of victims of the September 11th attack on the twin towers, and a member of the Hurricane Victim DNA Identification Expert Group (HVDIEG), assisting the Louisiana State Police in the DNA-based identification of victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Dr. Bieber has testified as an expert witness in dozens of admissibility hearings and trials in state, federal, and military courts in the U.S. and Canada.

Dr. Stephanie Boisson-Dupuis

PhD, Senior Research Associate, Casanova Laboratory, St. Giles Laboratory of Human Genetics of infectious Diseases, The Rockerfeller University, New York, NY, USA.
I began working in the field of primary immunodeficiencies as a master’s student at the University Paris René Descartes and INSERM, France, under the guidance of Pr. Alain Fischer in 1998. I pursued this interest by joining the Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases (HGID), directed by Jean-Laurent Casanova and Laurent Abel, where I received my Ph.D. in Human Genetics in 2002. During the course of my research, I discovered novel genetic etiologies conferring Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD), including a heterozygous germline STAT1 mutation associated with susceptibility to mycobacterial, but not viral disease, as well as other STAT1 deficiency leading to a broader clinical phenotype. This work has major medical implications. Elucidation of the molecular genetic basis of MSMD will shed light on the pathogenesis of mycobacterial disease, making it possible to provide molecular diagnoses for patients and genetic counseling for families. This information will pave the way for the use of IFN-γ for treatment in addition to antibiotics. Additionally, the genetic dissection of MSMD will pave the way for the genetic dissection of severe tuberculosis (TB) in otherwise healthy children. Upon completing my Ph.D., and a postdoctoral rotation in host-pathogen interactions, I was invited back to the HGID Laboratory as a Senior Researcher in 2006, and accompanied Dr. Casanova to establish the new branch of the lab at the Rockefeller University in 2008. I currently head the mycobacterial division of the laboratory consisting of 3 postdocs and 1 Ph.D. students. In collaboration with my colleagues, I am currently pursuing the molecular genetic exploration of TB. By using the candidate gene approach, we identified mutations in IL12RB1, providing the proof-of principal that TB results from single-gene inborn errors of immunity. The use of the whole exome sequencing approach allowed us to identify new genetic etiologies for severe TB of childhood, particularly TYK2 deficiency, predisposing to mycobacterial and/or viral diseases. We recently discovered the first monogenic but common genetic etiology of TB. I will pursue WES/WGS approach to further characterize the genetic predisposition to TB.

Dennis Bulman

Dennis Bulman is the Molecular Lab Head and Senior Scientist at Newborn Screening Ontario. He is also a Senior Scientist and Director of the Molecular Biomedicine Program at the CHEO Research Institute and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa. He is board certified by both the Canadian and American College of Medical Genetics in Clinical Molecular Genetics. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Genetics. Dr. Bulman’s research interests are in the field of Human Molecular genetics where he has published over 150 peer reviewed papers. For the last 20 years he has been involved in the identification of genes for rare genetic disorders, the translation of these discoveries to the clinic and more recently the implementation of new molecular testing paradigms to Newborn Screening.

After completing her Master’s degree in Genome Science and Technology at the University of British Columbia, she worked with Dr. Jan Friedman’s lab to interpret variants in genomes of children with rare disease. She currently works as a bioinformatician at a personalized cancer genomics company in Vancouver.

David Chitiyat

David Chitayat, MD, received his MD degree from Tel-Aviv University, Sackler School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, he served in the Israeli Defense Force and was promoted to the rank of Major. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Tel-Aviv Medical Center and did his fellowship in Medical Genetics at the Genetic Counselling Program at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, The Yeshiva University, New York, NY, USA and at the Department of Medical Genetics, University of British Columbia, BC, Canada. He joined the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Clinical Genetics, McGill University in 1989 and in 1991 joined the Department of Medical Genetics, Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics at The hospital for Sick Children and The Prenatal Diagnosis Program at The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and was appointed as the co-Director of the program at The Toronto General Hospital. In 1998 he was appointed as the Head of the Prenatal Diagnosis Program and as the Medical Director of the MSc Program in Genetic Counselling at the University of Toronto. Dr. Chitayat is a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Molecular Genetics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and is a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, The Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Dr. Chitayat has published over 15 book chapters and over 450 peer reviewed papers. He has been an invited visiting professor, and a keynote speaker at national and international universities and institutions. His research interests include Prenatal Diagnosis, Urogenital abnormalities, Cardiac Genetics and Neurogenetics.

William Gibson

Bill Gibson trained at the University of Toronto, UWO (now Western University), University of Calgary and at the University of Cambridge. In late 2011 he led the team that was first to publish the identification of rare mutations in the PRC2 complex as causative of Weaver syndrome. Since then, his group has identified additional rare mutations in other epigenetic regulators as causative of both overgrowth and undergrowth syndromes.

Dr. Eyal Grunebaum

Dr. Eyal Grunebaum obtained his medical degree from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel and completed a clinical and research fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.
Dr. Grunebaum was appointed as a Staff Clinician in the Division of Immunology and Allergy, Hospital for Sick Children in 2002. He served as Head of the Immunology Section in the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Director of the Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Allergy training program at the University of Toronto and Head of Division of Immunology and Allergy at Sickkids. Dr. Grunebaum is a Senior Scientist at Sickkids Research Institute, and a Professor in Pediatrics and Immunology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Grunebaum’s clinical and research activities focus on the diagnosis and management of inherited immune deficiencies, including the use of hematopoietic stem cells transplantations, enzyme replacement and gene therapies.

Stacey Hume

Dr. Hume has been with the Edmonton Molecular Diagnostic Lab in Alberta Health Services since 2005 - initially as the assistant director and since 2008 as the lab head. She is also an Associate Professor within the department of Medical Genetics at the University of Alberta. Dr. Hume’s professional interests include serving with her college (Canadian College of Medical Geneticists), mitochondrial diagnostics, and improving lab quality. Her lab has been diagnosing mitochondrial disease for 10 years. She is actively involved in developing cost-effective clinical algorithms that simplify the journey to a mitochondrial diagnosis.

Patricia Kosseim

Patricia Kosseim is Counsel in Osler's Privacy and Data Management Group and co-leads Osler’s AccessPrivacy platform, an integrated suite of innovative information solutions, consulting services and thought leadership. Patricia is a national leading expert in privacy and access law, having served over a decade as Senior General Counsel and Director General at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC). She provided strategic legal and policy advice on complex and emerging privacy issues; advised Parliament on privacy implications of legislative bills; led research initiatives on new information technologies and advanced privacy law in major litigation cases before the courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Prior to that, Patricia worked at Genome Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, where she developed and led national strategies for addressing legal, ethical and social aspects of health and genomic technologies. She began her career in Montreal practicing in the areas of health law, civil litigation, human rights, privacy and labor & employment with another leading national law firm.

Patricia has published and spoken extensively on matters of privacy law, health law and ethics. She has taught part-time at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law and has held many professional appointments and board memberships, including: Governor on the Board of Governors of The Ottawa Hospital; Chair of The Board of Directors of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute; Vice-Chair of the Research Integrity Committee of les Fonds de recherche du Quebec; and member of the National DNA Databank Advisory Committee.

Jack Laird

Jack Laird is Head of the Centre of Forensic Sciences Biology Section, overseeing a group of more than 80 forensic scientists, technologists, managers and support staff, who provide scientific analyses of evidence and expertise in criminal and other official investigations across the province of Ontario.
Since obtaining a M.Sc. degree in Forensic Science in 1994 from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Mr. Laird has held a number of progressively responsible positions at the CFS, including as a caseworking scientist in which role he performed scientific examinations and interpretations, issued reports, and testified as an expert witness in Ontario's courts. He left the Centre in 2009 to help establish a private forensic DNA laboratory, before returning to his current position in 2015.

Dr. Jennifer MacKenzie

Dr. Jennifer MacKenzie is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and previous interim Head of Genetics at McMaster University and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Queen’s University. Dr. MacKenzie completed her MD, Pediatric and Medical Genetics specialty training at the University of Toronto, and her Masters of Education at Queen’s University. Dr. MacKenzie has extensive experience in clinical and educational innovation and program evaluation. Her most recent project is to plan the new Introduction to Medicine curriculum for the McMaster Medical School. Dr. MacKenzie’s primary research focus is in medical education with a particular interest in medical students’ patterns of motivation, self-regulated learning, program evaluation and genetic education for non-genetic health care providers. She has extensive experience in clinical trials for rare diseases. Dr. MacKenzie has had a productive academic career with substantive peer-reviewed funding, numerous publications, and presentations.

Lauren MacNeil, PhD, FCCMG

I completed a PhD in exercise physiology at McMaster University under the supervision of Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the same lab. Over that time, my research interests evolved to include mitochondrial dysfunction associated with inactivity, aging and inherited metabolic diseases. Following the post-doctoral study with Dr. Tarnopolsky I began CCMG training with Dr. Murray Potter as a laboratory biochemical geneticist.
Since 2016 I have been the Biochemical Geneticist for the Metabolic Diseases lab at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Our library includes many small molecule metabolite tests as well as extensive coverage of lysosomal and mitochondrial enzymes in multiple specimen types.

Denyse Richardson

Dr. Denyse Richardson is an Associate Professor and Clinician Educator at the University of Toronto in the Department of Medicine, Division of Physiatry. She is also cross-appointed to The Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the School of Graduate Studies. Her career in healthcare began in Emergency Medical Services, followed by completing a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and working for several years as a physiotherapist. Subsequent to attaining her medical degree, and a fellowship in Physiatry (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), she completed a Masters in Education, specializing in Health Professions Education.
Her dedication towards health professions education is far-reaching. Locally, it extends across to the U of T Faculty of Medicine and with partner faculties and schools of other Health professions. She is a past Program Director for The University of Toronto Physiatry Residency Program. She also initiated a Division Faculty Development program and has had a role at the Uof T Centre for Faculty Development since its opening in 2002.
Nationally, she is a Clinician Educator at The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada having been involved in the CanMEDS program since its inception and continues to have a leadership role in the Competency By Design Project. She is an active member of the Physiatry Specialty Committee and the Examination Board. Many continue to benefit from her educational leadership, as a founder and past Director of the Canadian Comprehensive Review Course in Physiatry, which has just celebrated its 20th year and the National Physiatry Continuing Professional Development committee she initiated remains an active part of the education activity of the National Specialty Society.
Currently, at The University of Toronto, nationally and with international collaborators, she is working to further the knowledge, practice and implementation of Competency Based Education. In particular, she had led the development of the Coaching Model being implemented in CBD.
Her current educational research interests are in the domains of competency based education, and specifically coaching for improved practice, faculty development, communities of practice, and collaborative interprofessional education and care.

Neal Sandheimer

Dr. Sondheimer received his M.D. and Ph.D. at The University of Chicago, performing dissertation research on prion elements with Susan Lindquist. He trained in paediatrics, clinical and biochemical genetics at The University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is currently an Associate Professor of Paediatrics and Molecular Genetics at The University of Toronto and a staff physician in Metabolics at SickKids. His research interests are in mitochondrial genetics, mitochondrial gene expression and their impacts on common and rare disorders.

Dr. Jennifer Schleit, Laboratory Director, Blueprint Genetics NGS Laboratory, Seattle WA USA

Dr. Jennifer Schleit grew up in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Her fascination with genetics began at an early age due to a classmate having a rare inherited neurodegenerative disorder. She received a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry and Microbiology from Dalhousie University and a PhD in Pathology from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. Following her graduate education, Dr. Schleit completed a clinical fellowship at the University of Washington and received her certification in clinical molecular genetics from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). She has performed research in multiple fields including aging, protein biochemistry, cancer, and connective tissue disorders. Dr. Schleit served as an Assistant Director at a genetic testing laboratory at the University of Washington before accepting a position as Senior Geneticist at Blueprint Genetics. Dr. Schleit has recently been named the laboratory director of the new Blueprint Genetics NGS laboratory located in Seattle, WA.

Tracy Stockley

Dr. Stockley is Head, Department of Clinical Laboratory Genetics at University Health Network in Toronto. In this role Dr. Stockley oversees the translational Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and the Genome Diagnostics Clinical Laboratory at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Stockley is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Stockley has an interest in quality improvement related to high-complexity laboratory testing, and has participated in standard development for molecular diagnostics with multiple national and international organizations including Health Canada, Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), European Molecular Quality Network and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Dr. Stockley is the current President of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists.

Jonathan Sherbino MD MEd FRCPC FAcadMEd DRCPSC (CE)

Dr. Sherbino is the Assistant Dean, Health Professions Education Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University. He is a professor in the Department of Medicine, McMaster University. Jonathan is the past chair of the Specialty Committee for Emergency Medicine, Royal College of Physicians &Surgeons of Canada.
Jonathan is a Clinician Educator, co-editing the CanMEDS 2015 Framework and co-hosting the KeyLIME (Key Literature in Medical Education) podcast. He is an award winning teacher, including the national Emergency Medicine teacher of the year 2018. His research focuses on clinical reasoning and diagnostic error.

Sherry Taylor

Dr. Taylor received her PhD from Queen’s University in 1990 in which she identified mutations in the Factor VIII and Factor IX genes causing Hemophilias A and B.
After which she undertook a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. James Gusella at the Harvard Medical School and was a member of the team which cloned the gene for Huntington disease.
Upon her return to Canada she joined the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory at the Kingston General Hospital and completed her CCMG fellowship in Molecular Genetics.
She moved to New Brunswick in 2009 and established a Division of Molecular Diagnostics in the Department of Laboratory Medicine for Horizon Health Services.
Dr. Taylor moved to Edmonton in 2012 and took up a position as a Molecular Geneticist and Co-Head of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.
She became Clinical Site Head, North Sector for Alberta Public Laboratories Genetics and Genomics in 2013.
She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and cross appointed to Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta.
In addition to molecular diagnostics service Dr. Taylor has served on multiple government committees related to genetic services and education.
She has also had a leading role in undergraduate medical education and curriculum revision and renewal at Queen’s, Dalhousie and the University of Alberta. With collaborators she has participated in implementation of the ICE model in genetics teaching and pearls of wisdom as a way to welcome students to medical school.
