A. General Requirements:

CCMG Training Centres, depending on specialty, must comprise the following:

  • A CCMG certified clinical geneticist;
  • A CCMG certified genetic and genomic diagnostics laboratory geneticist; Or a CCMG certified cytogenetics laboratory geneticist and a CCMG certified molecular genetics laboratory geneticist;
  • A laboratory biochemical geneticist And a clinical biochemical geneticist at least one of whom is certified by the CCMG.

The clinical caseload of each centre includes a mix and volume of cases that permit the staff to train candidates to the level of accreditation sought.

In addition to professional staff, a centre has suitably qualified technical and clinical support staff with full-time equivalents sufficient to manage the clinical caseload in an effective manner.  There is sufficient space, equipment and other resources to enable staff to provide high quality clinical and laboratory service.

The centre must be university affiliated.

Comprehensive prenatal, oncology, clinical biochemical and general genetics services are available locally such that 75% of a trainee’s experience is available within the centre OR the training centre seeking accreditation has made a formal training agreement with an affiliated CCMG training centre for training in any service type not available locally.

A merged genetic and genomic diagnostics (GGD) laboratory Or a cytogenetics laboratory And a molecular genetic laboratory offering a typical range of testing modalities and processing prenatal, constitutional and oncology samples.

A biochemical genetic laboratory offering a typical range of testing modalities and processing plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid samples.

B. Personnel Requirements:

Local CCMG Training Centre Committee

This committee oversees all trainees and includes fellows of the CCMG representing both clinical and laboratory genetics. A CCMG certified member serves as co-chair when the chair is not a CCMG fellow (e.g. is a RCPSC member). For the purposes of the CCMG Accreditation process, the chair of this committee will serve as the Local CCMG Training Program Director.

Members are drawn from each of the specialties in which a centre is accredited to train.

The CCMG Training Centre Committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Selecting qualified trainees;
  • Communicating with the CCMG regarding training: specifically, ensuring all individual trainees are registered with the CCMG Credentials Committee within three months of their training start date;
  • Communicating with the CCMG regarding examinations: specifically, ensuring that individual trainees have indicated and paid fees on schedule to enable them to sit CCMG exams;
  • Ensuring that Supervisory Committee  meeting minutes and copies of all trainees’ evaluation forms are documented and kept on file for at least five years after trainees complete the program.
  • Ensuring that Local Training Centre committee meets at least two times per year when there are trainees.  Minutes of the meetings are kept by the committee and include records and discussion of the progress of current trainees submitted by each individual trainee’s Supervisory Committee.

Trainee’s Supervisory Committee

Each individual trainee has a three-person Supervisory Committee chaired by a member who is CCMG -accredited in the relevant training specialty and who acts as the primary supervisor.  The Supervisory Committee may be a subset of the Local CCMG Training Centre Committee.

The members of the Supervisory Committees must have appointments at the university affiliated with the centre.

There should be one contact per training discipline at each training centre who is identified as the person primarily responsible for curriculum development in that speciality.

The required composition and responsibilities of this committee are described in the specialty CCMG Training Guidelines.

C. CCMG Training Program Requirements

Training centres must make arrangements so that trainees are registered in the faculty of graduate and post-doctoral studies of the university affiliated with the site; or that trainees are hired as employees of a health authority which provides defined employment conditions and a contract.

Each specialty training program must meet the requirements outlined in the CCMG Training Guidelines.

The Training Program must ensure that at each rotation a trainee has:

  • Quiet work space, desk, computer, secure storage space
  • Proxy access to a university library
  • Formal teaching and directed independent study
  • Written description of the planned rotations with goals that make up a trainee’s individual program
  • Access to relevant rounds, research seminars, journal clubs, lab conferences, etc.
  • Resources to conduct the research and method validation included in the training program
  • Opportunities to meet all CanMEDS objectives
