42nd Anniversary Year "Celebrating Canada’s Medical Genetics" (1976 - 2018)

Message from the President March 2017

We are just over a month away from our41stAnnual Meeting and Scientific Conference in Montreal(April 30 – May 3). Earlyregistrationends April 1.  Don’t miss out!

AlthoughCCMG committeesare very active throughout the year, annual face-to-face meetings provide an opportunity to tackle some larger projects, put final touches on documents and set priorities for the coming year.  Not to mention, the benefit of informal sharing of ideas and catching up with medical genetics colleagues from across Canada! If you are on a committee, your attendance in Montreal is strongly encouraged as there is NO teleconference support available at the hotel.

An additional perk for CCMG members arriving for the committee meetings on Sunday, is aninvitation to lunchwith trainees and junior faculty as part of the inauguralFellow Education Day.  Justindicate on your registration formthat you plan to attend the lunch for catering purposes.  Lunch is free for all ‘mentors’.

Did you know that our registration fees are kept so reasonable due to the generous support of our sponsors?  In fact, this year, due to our strong financial status, conference fees areactually lowerthan they were last year.   Please show your appreciationby attending the sponsored events and visiting the booths to speak with representatives in attendance.  This year we don’t have any partner organizations for our meeting, so it is more important than ever for CCMG members to turn-out for exhibitor events and show the sponsors that their support is valued and appreciated.

The Scientific Conference gets underway at1700 ET on Sunday April 30, with a keynote address byBev Heim-Myers, CEO of the Huntington Society of Canada, Chair of the Canadian Coalition for Genetic Fairness and advocate for Bill S-201 (An Act to prohibit and prevent genetic discrimination) [openparliament.ca/bills/42-1/S-201/]. The keynote address is followed by the inaugural presentation of theF. Clarke Fraser Award for Excellence in Mentorship and TeachingtoDr. Charles Scriver, a worthy recipient who will set a high standard for subsequent years!  The evening wraps up with aWelcome Receptionwith food stations that will give attendees a chance to mingle with the honoured guests and catch-up with friends.

The rest of the scientific program promises to be packed with presentations on the theme of‘Celebrating Canada’s Medical Genetics’ withover 50 abstracts received.  Details of the conference program (and shortly abstracts), can be viewed on theCCMG websiteand a conference app will be provided to allow for easy access to theprogramdetails.

TheAnnual General Meetingand award presentations take place over lunch on Monday May 1.  We will honourDr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg, recipient of this year’s Founders’ Award andDr. Janet Buchananwinner of the John L. Hamerton Award for service to the College. Lunch and the award presentations are open to all conference registrants.

The 2017 CCMG conference in Montreal promises the opportunity for collegiality, collaboration and mentorship by bringing Canadian medical geneticists together in a great destination.  I look forward to seeing everyone in Montreal.
